Chef Tom Colicchio, whose work as a chef, restaurateur, television personality and social justice advocate has earned him eight James Beard Awards, will return to Tulsa to promote his new book, “Why I Cook,” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15. At the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, 1304 N. Kenosha Street. In Tulsa.
Tickets for the event, presented by Magic City Books, cost $42 and include a copy of Why I Cook as well as an admission ticket to the event. A portion of every ticket sold will be donated to the food bank.
Why I Cook is a combination of memoir and cookbook, in which Colicchio shares his personal thoughts from more than 40 years behind the stove. From pre-dawn fishing trips with his grandfather to running the flattop at the local swim club’s snack shack, to finding his way as a young chef in New York City, Colicchio recounts the dishes and memories that shaped him as a young chef. Part of the book was part of the second issue of Switchyard magazine produced by the University of Tulsa. Colicchio was part of the public event associated with this issue, which was published in November 2023.
Colicchio is the chef and owner of Crafted Hospitality, which includes the Crafted, Temple Court and Vallata restaurants in New York City; Las Vegas Craftstick; And a small batch in Garden City, New York.
He has been the chief judge for the Emmy Award-winning reality series “Top Chef” since its inception, and produced the 2013 documentary “A Place at the Table,” which examines the underlying causes of hunger in the United States. He has worked with former First Lady Michelle Obama on the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, and has established himself as a leading “citizen chef” advocating for a food system that values access, affordability, and nutrition over corporate interests.
