Bath & Body Works apologizes for candle packaging that sparked controversy

Bath & Body Works apologizes for selling a candle with packaging that some said resembled Ku Klux Klan hoods.

The three-wick candle was called “Snowed In” and appeared briefly on the company’s website for purchase. It was quickly pulled from the website once the issue was brought to Bath & Body Works’ attention.

The image on the package was supposed to convey a snowflake cut out of paper. The outer edges of the snowflake are white and cone-shaped, with two holes cut near the center.

“I’ve never seen a snowflake look like this,” one Instagram user commented.

Another said: “This was not an accident.”

But others felt differently.

“It’s just a poorly executed design – it shouldn’t have been approved,” one Instagram user responded.

“That’s a paper snowflake. I wouldn’t look at that and think it’s a racist candle,” another said.

A Bath & Body Works spokesperson said in a statement Monday that the error was unintentional, and that the company is committed to fixing it.

“We apologize to anyone we offended, are working quickly to remove this item and are evaluating our process moving forward,” the spokesperson said.
