The Sabers are off to a 1-3-0 start, and suddenly, we’re seeing clips of their captain Rasmus Dahlen battling his teammates in training. The Sabers (-105) may not look like a very attractive bet right now, but the gap between them and the Penguins (-115) looks narrower than the current price suggests.

The kind of incident we saw between Dahlin and Peyton Krebs in practice shouldn’t be seen as a bad thing. It’s indicative of the type of competitive level that the Sabers have lacked in recent years, and it’s happened on a lot of successful rosters in the past (like the 2018-19 Blues).

The Sabers overall have looked very strong in the last two games, however, the desire to turn things around right away is evident. They played well in the 5-2 win over the Panthers last time out, and may have been better despite losing one previous game against the Kings.

All four of the Sabers’ matchups have come against teams that will go to the playoffs this season. The other two games came against the Devils. In those four games, the Sabers have an expected goal share of 52.8% at even strength.

Meanwhile, the Penguins have almost the same amount of question marks as the Sabres, including a goaltender position that seems somewhat sketchy.

Tristan Jarry was a question mark entering the year after the ugly end to the 2023-24 campaign. He has posted a save percentage of 0.868% so far. Whether they hand that starter to Jarry or Joel Bloomquist, the Sabers have a goaltending advantage with either option in Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Devon Levi.

At +105 or better, I see it as worthwhile to back the Sabers to earn a much-needed two points tonight.

I don’t think anyone expected this kind of start for the Colorado Avalanche. Starting 0-3 with two losses by four goals? Considering the star power this team has, it’s quite baffling.

How could a team with such defensive solidity, with superstars up front, lose so badly?

It tells you everything you need to know about the people in the network. Alexander Georgiev is a bad goalkeeper, and has proven to be, at best, a backup goalie. Last season, he started over 60 games with a sub-.900 SV% while scoring 5.0 goals above expected (GSAx). This season, his performance has somehow gotten worse with a terrible .790 SV% and a league-worst -7.7 GSAx.

I don’t even think Justus Annonen is much better. He looked like an effective backup last season, but in his two games he played, he allowed four goals on 17 shots.

Tonight the Avalanche (-132) face the Boston Bruins (+110). Even though they come to town with underlying numbers that don’t look good, the B-Class continues to pull out the stops. I wouldn’t worry about the fact that they’re 10th in both expected goals and xGA/60; Both times they were defeated they were by the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.

We also haven’t seen Brad Marchand light the lamp yet – while Elias Lindholm and Mark Castelich (!) lead the charge in Beantown. Through four games, I wasn’t expecting Kastlic to have more points than David Pastrnak, but here we are. I don’t see that continuing, but the Bruins continue to be a talent-producing factory.

I think a lot of people didn’t know what to expect from Boston, especially since the Jeremy Swayman situation was looming. However, with Swayman back, I only expect the B’s to get better. It won’t be pretty for whoever is in the Avs net.

Pick: Bruins (+102 on FanDuel)
