We could be getting Dune: Messiah sooner than expected, as director Denis Villeneuve has revealed that he will be working on it faster than he thought.

Dune: Part 2 was released earlier this year to critical and financial success, with Dune being released again in 2021. The third film, based on Dune: Messiah, will begin 12 years after the events of the second film.

“Let’s say I thought that after Part 2 I would take a break, I would go back to the forest and stay in the forest for a while to recover. But the forest wasn’t really like that,” Villeneuve told Deadline. “It suits me, and I’ll be back behind the camera sooner than I think, but that’s all I can say.”

He also confirmed that main cast members Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Anya Taylor-Joy will be back — Taylor-Joy’s Alia Atreides was introduced very briefly in Dune 2. “They have to come back. They’re with the main cast when it happens,” Villeneuve said. And more worms. What can I say?”

Villeneuve previously said he thought he was done working with Arrakis after Dune: Part Two. “First, it is important for people to understand that for me, it was a diptych,” he commented. “It was actually a pair of movies that would be based on the first book. That’s done and done with. If I did a third movie, which is in the writing process, it wouldn’t be like a trilogy. It’s weird to say that, but if I went back there, it would be “It’s to do something that looks different and has its own identity.”
