The Boston Bruins are approaching the start of the 2024-25 season without goalie Jeremy Swayman. The closer we get to opening night on October 8, the more and more it looks as if the former University of Maine netminder won’t be between the black and gold pipes.
That likely leaves Boston with the duo of Joonas Korpisalo and Brandon Posey to start the season and likely that duo until or if Swayman is signed. The Bruins and Swayman have until December 1st to work out a deal for this season, and it certainly seems like that could become a possibility. This wouldn’t be good.
Boston faces a tough schedule in October and November, and if Swayman isn’t in goal, things could get very precarious as far as Jim Montgomery’s crew is concerned. You can’t win any division in the first two months, but you can certainly put yourself behind eight-ball in terms of standings, especially playing in the Atlantic Division. One NHL insider believes that if something doesn’t happen soon with Swayman, it could be a while before his contract is settled.
NHL Insider offers a scary opinion on Jeremy Swayman and the Bruins
NHL Insider Jimmy Murphy, a Bruins reporter, offered his opinion on the Fifth Liners Podcast that if nothing happens soon, both sides could settle for the long term with Swayman in goal for Montgomery.
“I think this will end on December 1st.” Murphy said. “I really think if we don’t see something in the next couple of weeks, it’s going to go down the stretch and the Bruins are going to have some problems.”
If this ends up being the case, this wouldn’t be the best scenario for the Bruins heading into the season. The point guard that had been solid the past two seasons with Swayman and Linus Ullmark suddenly became a big question mark for Boston. Pursuing goal isn’t a position that’s a question mark in the NHL, especially if you feel like you’re competitive. If this eventually happens, things are sure to be interesting for the Black and Gold.
