Penn State University police are investigating a Nov. 2 incident involving Jason Kelce and an unidentified college football fan at the school, PEOPLE can confirm.
Penn State on Monday, November 4, verified that university police and public safety were looking into the moment the 36-year-old former NFL star smashed the phone of a heckler who appeared to call Kelsey’s brother Travis a slur. Homophobic.
The university did not specify whether it was investigating Jason, the football fan, or how the incident occurred.
PEOPLE has reached out to representatives for both Jason and ESPN.
Jason, who was on campus to appear on ESPN’s College GameDay during the Penn State-Ohio State game, can be seen in several videos posted on social media surrounded by fans as he made his way onto the field carrying a can of beer.
In the now-viral footage shared on X (formerly Twitter), the football fan is seen approaching Jason and asking: “Hey Kelsey. How do you feel about your brother dating Taylor Swift?” the man asked, using the slur to refer to Travis, 35, who has been dating Swift, 34, since 2023.

Seconds later, Jason turned around, grabbed the man’s phone out of his hands, and smashed it to the ground. The NFL alum then stood in front of the man and said, “Who’s the f*** right now?” Other people also showed up to intervene.
The owner of the phone, who was wearing a Penn State jacket at the time of the incident, can be seen walking behind him and apparently recording Jason before the altercation occurred.
“Looks like a Penn State student was standing up to Kelsey for no reason,” wrote the initial X user who posted the clip alongside it. “The Wild Scene at State College.”

In footage shared by another user on X, which was apparently taken right after the phone was smashed, a Penn State fan is seen walking through the crowd looking for his phone. At some point, he apparently told Jason: “Give me my phone, bro.”
