Two men were killed Tuesday afternoon in a shooting at the hands of a disgruntled former Navy Pier employee, according to Chicago police.

CHICAGO — Two men were killed Tuesday afternoon in a shooting at the hands of a disgruntled former Navy Pier employee, according to Chicago police.

The accident occurred around 1:18 p.m., on the north side of Navy Pier near an administrative office in the loading dock area.

The former employee went to the loading dock and fired several shots, hitting two men, police said. The victims, who ranged in age from 47 to 51, were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where they died from their injuries. Their identities were not revealed.

“We would like to extend our condolences to the victims, their families and loved ones,” police said.

A person of interest is being sought, but is not believed to be in the Navy Pier area. Detectives are still processing the scene.

Unconfirmed reports from a police traffic scanner described the possible suspect as wearing a white mask and a white chef’s uniform.

“Our manager got a phone call and that’s how he found out what was going on. He started turning off all the lights, locked all the gates. We left all our stuff on the floor… Then we all gathered in the back. I turned off all the lights in the storage room and waited patiently,” said one employee at Navy Pier. Navy Pier was temporarily closed after the incident, and visitors were asked to evacuate. One visitor told FOX 32 that workers at the pier were instructed to shelter in place.

By 3:40 p.m., the shelter in place had been lifted, according to officials. The pier has also been reopened to the public.

Levi’s, the catering company at Navy Pier, issued a statement about the shooting:

“We are absolutely devastated by today’s tragic events and the shocking loss of two of our family members. Our hearts go out to their families and loved ones, whose lives have been changed forever.”

Police described this as an “isolated incident.”
