Sharjah Cricket Stadium hosts 300th AFG-BAN ODI match, first international stadium to reach this milestone | Cricket news

The iconic Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Wednesday became the first international cricket stadium to host 300 men’s matches with the first ODI between Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

The historic UAE stadium has hosted 252 ODIS, 38 T20s and 10 Test matches before Wednesday’s match. Sri Lanka and Pakistan played the first ever match at this stadium in the ODI Asia Cup in 1984.

Hosting several memorable tournaments in the 1990s, legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar scored seven ODI tons, including the famous ‘Desert Storm’ strike against Australia at the stadium in 1998. Tendulkar’s seven centuries were matched only by Pakistan’s Saeed Anwar on the ground . .

To commemorate Tendulkar’s exploits at the venue, the West Stand of the venue has been renamed as ‘Sachin Tendulkar Stand’ on the occasion of the batting maestro’s 50th birthday in 2023.

Overall, Pakistan participated in almost 50 percent of the matches played at the stadium, appearing in 144 contests and 93 of them. Sri Lanka (87) and India (72) make up the top three. India won 35 home matches before their last appearance in 2000.
