PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) – Philadelphia’s iconic Love Park turned dark purple Tuesday as hundreds came out to see some of their favorite stars at a dance party with civic engagement at its core.
Stars included Bill Nye, Science Guy, Quavo and Sixers players Reggie Jackson and KJ Martin, and the goal, according to Ashley Spillane of the Civic Responsibility Project – one of the party’s organizers – was to get people to vote.
“We’re going to have a little dance party before we go out in March and celebrate at City Hall,” Spillane said.
Tuesday was the last day in Pennsylvania for voters to request a mail-in ballot.
Nye said it’s important to vote early because it motivates other friends and family to follow along and cast their ballots as well.
“We want people to get out and vote, and early voting is good because you get it done,” he said. “It is in the system and will be counted.”
Theta, a volunteer who came to Philadelphia from Washington, D.C., for the ceremony, said she is a big believer in a little pomp and circumstance when it comes to voting.
“I’m a boomer. We used to say power to the people…you know the people have the power.” “Each of us can be in control if we exercise our voice.”
We are less than a week away from Election Day on November 5.
