The Spartans had a tough run heading into their second bye of the season. After a big win over Iowa State in Week 8 that pushed them above .500, MSU dropped a close battle to the rival Michigan Wolverines before being defeated by Indiana State two weeks ago. Although Michigan State tried to keep things close for the hot Hoosiers, more football mistakes led to a 47-10 defeat.
There is still time for MSU to rally and earn a spot in a bowl game, with three games remaining, especially with the final two games coming to home. However, a match on the road will test their mettle.
Illinois was looking like a team that could be a sleeper and sneak into the Big Ten Championship Game picture. However, things have gone a little sideways for the Illini family. After wins over Purdue and Michigan, Illinois got its lunch from Oregon before finding more offensive struggles against Minnesota at home last week. The Fighting Illini have scored 20 or more points just twice over the past five games, although they have at least bowled this winter.
The Spartans are 27-19-2 against Illinois, including winning the last meeting in 2022.
