A freeze warning affects part of Pennsylvania on Friday

The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning at 12:24 p.m. Thursday, valid for Friday between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m. for Westmoreland Ridges, Fayette Ridges and the Upper Highlands in Indiana, as well as Mercer, Venango, Forrest and Lawrence, Butler, Clarion, Jefferson, Armstrong, Washington, Greene, Westmoreland, and Fayette counties, Indiana.

“Temperatures as low as 30 degrees are expected,” the weather service added.

“Frost and freezing conditions can kill crops and other sensitive plants and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service explains. “Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.”

Freeze monitoring or warning – this is what it means

Freeze warnings are issued from May to October (but can be extended if necessary), when low temperatures are expected to be 29-32 degrees. If temperatures are likely to drop to these thresholds, a freeze warning may be issued a few days ahead of time.

According to the weather service, if a freeze watch or watch is issued in your area, there’s not much you can do to protect plants. If you can move your sensitive plants indoors, do so because freezing will likely kill them, depending on the severity of the conditions.
