A Class 2 recall has been issued on nearly 80,000 pounds of Costco Kirkland Premium Butter

If you’ve purchased any butter from Costco recently, it’s time to check your refrigerator.

In early October, the FDA sent out an initial recall of Kirkland Signature Butter, produced by Continental Dairy Laboratory Southwest LLC. The recall concerns 79,200 pounds of butter due to an undeclared allergen. According to the FDA, packages of Kirkland Signature Sweet Salted and Unsalted Cream contain buttercream as an ingredient, but may not have the “Contains Milk” allergy statement shown on the package.

On November 7, the FDA classified the recall as Class II, meaning it is “a situation where use of or exposure to the violative product may result in temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where there is a potential for serious adverse health consequences.” “. far.”

The recalled products, which were produced and distributed in Texas, include 1,300 packages (about 46,800 pounds) of Kirkland Signature Sweet Unsalted Butter, and 900 packages (about 32,400 pounds) of Kirkland Signature Sweet Salted Butter. All products come with “best by” dates between February 22, 2025 and March 29, 2025.

As the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) notes, milk is one of the main foods that “causes the most serious allergic reactions in the United States.”

“The symptoms and severity of allergic reactions to food can vary between individuals and can also vary from person to person over time,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added. “Anaphylaxis is a sudden, severe allergic reaction that may cause death. Not all allergic reactions will develop into anaphylaxis, and more than 40% (2 in 5) of children with food allergies in the United States are treated in the emergency department. ”

Although the FDA has not published information about what to do if you purchase these recalled items — nor has it shared if there have been any illness or adverse reactions from consuming the product — the usual course of action is to either throw them away or return them. Bring them to your place of purchase just in case.
