A little girl and her therapy dog face Lyme disease together

When C. L. Smith’s niece, Sandra, was diagnosed with Lyme disease after 10 years of misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatments, the family was relieved.

However, little did they know, Sandra’s struggle was far from over. She was later diagnosed with an aggressive form of thyroid cancer.

However, through all the doctor appointments and surgeries, there was a bright spot in Sandra’s life, her beloved dog Ginger.

But when Ginger also contracted Lyme disease, they both found themselves fighting for their lives. While supporting and comforting each other, Sandra and Ginger prove to be each other’s best medicine.

“I want young people to be inspired by the love and dedication that Sandra and Ginger showed each other despite their serious health issues,” Smith says. “I think supporting each other has been literally life-saving.”

In “The Ginger Story,” Smith introduces young readers to Ginger, a lovable and lovable golden retriever who was adopted as a therapy dog for Sandra, a spunky little girl with chronic Lyme disease.

Ginger quickly integrates into the household and becomes close to the other family pets while also taking care of Sandra. Ginger loves spending time with Sandra on good and bad days. But when Ginger gets sick, the dog discovers that she needs Sandra as much as Sandra needs her.

In an effort to raise awareness and promote better funding for research, Smith educates readers about the devastating effects of living with chronic Lyme disease.

Smith hopes the book will help shed light on tick-borne disease. “Lyme disease is one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the United States,” she said. “What better time to fund research and eliminate misdiagnosis than now?”

“Ginger’s Story” is available for purchase at online retailers.
