What’s the best-selling game on eBay right now in the US? Probably something modern, right? Maybe The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom or the excellent remake of Silent Hill 2. The answer is actually a lot weirder – it’s Piglet’s Big Game for PS2 and GameCube.
Anyone who logs on to eBay in the US right now and searches for the PS2 or GameCube version of Disney Piglet’s Big Game will notice that there are essentially no listings for the game. This is a bit strange, isn’t it? It’s not a particularly rare game, and many copies have been made. But after netizens noticed something strange in the game, it became an overnight sensation, and dozens decided they had to see it for themselves.
The buzz around the 20-year-old licensed game — loosely based on 2003’s Piglet’s Big Movie — began on Friday, when Twitter user Jaxonloid posted a screen recording of a YouTube clip of one of the game’s music scores. The track, called Foreboding 1, has some real Silent Hill vibes, channeling the eerie ambient music you’d find alongside most horror games of the era.
Another Twitter user, EX Falchion, posted a clip of the same gameplay, showing that the creepy vibes go beyond just the soundtrack. The clip, which is just 24 seconds long, shows a piglet walking through an apparently abandoned mansion, with the aforementioned ambient music playing in the background. For an E-rated game, it’s definitely scarier than you’d expect. It’s reminiscent of Resident Evil, in a weird way, and it’s definitely not something I want to experience anytime soon.
Fortunately I couldn’t, even if I wanted to. Before the game went viral on Twitter, there were dozens of listings for the game on eBay, and most of them were priced fairly low — usually around $20 or so. Now, there is nothing to see. Looking at recently completed listings on eBay, more than 60 copies have been sold in the past four days, which is a significant increase compared to the game’s pre-tweet sales, which were selling between zero and two copies every week or two.
So is Piglet the next big thing? Can we expect to see the HD Remaster version soon? Maybe not. But hey, it just goes to show that there are still some hidden gems in gaming’s past waiting to be rediscovered. Even if these hidden gems are weird, they are Disney games bordering on horror.
