Colter Shaw's impending change in Tracker's second season will make (or break) the hit CBS show

Colter Shaw undergoes changes in Tracker Season 2, and while on the surface, this new side of Colter may be great for his development, it may also be detrimental to his character. The second season of the CBS television drama follows Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw, a survival expert and tracker (hence the series name). Coulter is a lone wolf who travels the country and makes money by helping ordinary citizens and law enforcement agencies. As Tracker season 2 approaches, viewers should expect to learn more about Hartley’s character and past.

The first season of Tracker was so popular on CBS because it was not only the network’s highest-rated scripted series for the 2023-2024 season, but it was also the most-watched scripted show on network television. So, season 2 has a lot to achieve. Based on Hartley’s statements regarding the second season of Tracker, the writers are wisely adapting the story and building on what worked in the first season. However, one change regarding Colter’s character could make or break the series.

Tracker Season 2 Humanizes Colter Show With Unsolved Case, CBS Series Takes Audiences Back in Time (Again)

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Justin Hartley, who also serves as an executive producer on the CBS action drama, discusses what’s to come for Colter after Tracker’s first season wraps. Hartley hints that one of the episodes will bring Colter back to a case he couldn’t solve. In doing so, the series will attempt to humanize the protagonist. Hartley explains:

“We will provide that [Colter is] A human, not a superhero. “He just hung on to the fact that he couldn’t figure it out, and it haunted him for years and years.”

Like many other television shows that feature detectives and/or people solving cases, Coulter has one mystery that he cannot solve that still haunts him to this day. In Tracker season 2, this case will return and hopefully this time Colter will be able to solve it. Whatever the case, this Tracker season 2 episode will knock Coulter off his pedestal, bring him back down to earth and make him look like a human being who makes mistakes.

Humanizing the Coulter Shaw can have two different effects on the tracker. Changing Coulter could either destroy his character or make him better

While humanizing characters in TV shows is always a good thing, Tracker writers have to be careful when doing so with Colter. If done right, Colter’s change will make him a more dynamic and physical character. However, adding this extra layer to Colter may seem overdone and excessive. Thus, the new development may detract from the protagonist’s skills as a rewarder, which is what the series revolves around.

Tracker Season 2 contains 22 episodes and premieres on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at 8 PM ET on CBS.

Viewers want to see Coulter as an expert in his field, not as someone whose mistakes outweigh his skills. Yes, Coulter should be humanized, but not to the point where he is completely discredited by his work. However, based on Season 1, Tracker Season 2 should have no problem diligently and skillfully developing Colter’s character.
