Danny DeVito revealed that he was almost killed by Robin Williams while they were together.
The late Williams was considered one of Hollywood’s greatest comedians, bringing verve and energy to every performance. Meanwhile, DeVito is also an accomplished actor with a long and successful career in the entertainment industry.
Despite their long careers as comedy legends, the duo had only worked together once before Williams’ tragic death by suicide in 2014.
In 2002, Williams and DeVito joined forces for the comedy-thriller Death to Smoochy, which the latter directed.
The film follows corrupt children’s show host “Rainbow” Randolph Smiley, played by Williams, who is arrested by the FBI for accepting bribes to bring children onto the show.
Rainbow Vows revenge on Edward Norton’s Smoochy, the beloved unicorn character who replaced him. Although a lesser-known film, it brought Williams and DeVito on screen together for the first and only time.
Although it was named Roger Ebert’s worst film of 2002, DeVito looks back on his experience fondly when he recalls working with Williams.
“I laughed with him,” DeVito told Far Out. But he pointed out that on one occasion the laughter went too far and led to an accident in the swimming pool.
“He almost killed me once in a swimming pool,” the actor, who turns 80 today (November 17), said. “I’m not a great swimmer. I was deep down and he was on trial, and I’ve never laughed so hard.” She swallowed a large gulp of water and choked for five minutes.
DeVito recounted that a crew member saved him when he realized he was choking. “Everyone was laughing at me,” he admitted.
Although he did not remember the Williams joke that nearly drowned him, he added: “It was very good.”
DeVito recently shared his thoughts on Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot in the HBO series The Penguin.
The director played the Penguin in 1992’s Batman Returns, where his terrifying, raw fish-eating character with his long nose remains one of the best images in Batman history.
But Farrell’s take on the villain in Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2 seems to have got DeVito thinking.
“Oh, Colin is after me for my money,” he said. “And it’s a different story. I’ve been watching it. I haven’t watched all of it, but I’ve watched most of what was shown…and you know.” “It’s really good.”
He later pointed out the key differences in their portrayal, adding: “So my character is completely different than he was in The Penguin with Colin, which is good. He’s good. Here you have a gangster Penguin. He’s good, and he does a great job.” “.
