Finneas (Billie Eilish) quietly releases an album of bitter songs about relationships gone wrong

Finneas O’Connell is the composer and producer brother of Billie Eilish. The siblings have had an extraordinary string of successes – two Oscars! – Working with Billy as the voice of their collaboration

On Friday, Finneas released his own album, Very Quietly. It’s called “For Cryin’ Out Loud” and it’s on the iTunes charts at around number 50. No one knew it was released, including yours truly.

So what does Finneas’ new album sound like? It’s surprisingly bitter. The title track is called “Starfucker”. Apparently, Phineas had problems in the romance department. a surprise! He had dates that he didn’t really care about. And he’s not ashamed of it either. He’s angry.

“You, star, I loved you,” he writes in a slightly nasal voice. “Against my better judgment/
In the evening, when you leave/ Your promises have lost their meaning/ I was yours before you were quiet.”

You think as the song progresses there should be an elaborate line. But Finneas – who can write a catchy melody off the top of his head – is not a great lyricist. Metaphor and imagery are not his strong suit. If he doesn’t love you, he’ll say so. Handyman is not included.

The second track goes along with this theme. “What would it take to break your heart?” The topic continues. He is not happy with this woman. And when he asks: “Do you think I’ll leave a mark?” We get what it was made for.

I was a little surprised about “For Cryin’ Out Loud”. I think this is how Phineas works his own art in between stoking Billy’s star-making machine. I just hope he enjoys the ride more.
