After a slow start to the 2024-25 season, the Red Wings have found some rhythm over the last few games, albeit an odd one. The team has won each of its last three matches, despite being outscored in all three matches. After Alex Leon made a headstand in a 1-0 win over the New York Islanders, as Detroit trailed in shots, 30-11, Cam Talbot stepped in and played well Thursday night against the New Jersey Devils, stopping 37 of the 40 shots he faced in the 5-3 win. .
The Wings were outscored 40-20 by the Devils in Detroit, marking the sixth time already this season they’ve lost the battle for shots on goal. While the team is picking up wins, they need to find a way to dominate matches, as their path to victory so far will not be sustainable.
The Sabers entered the new season with a sense of optimism, thanks to a talented young core and two quality netminders. However, it did not translate into positive results. After losing twice to the Devils in the NHL World Series in Czech Republic to start the season, Buffalo has had a mediocre performance in North America as well. They have some momentum heading into Saturday, following wins over the Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars.
This will be the first of four meetings this season between the Atlantic Division foes. Detroit won three of the four meetings last year, including one in Western New York.
