Hurricane Helen impacts Indy roads: Tips for driving safely

INDIANAPOLIS – Drivers in central Indiana were on alert all day due to wind and rain coming from Helen. WRTV shares what you need to know to stay safe behind the wheel any time weather takes a toll on our roads.

“Well, you definitely have to go a little slower and be more careful,” Pat VanDoren said.

The 76-year-old drives a cargo truck and is more careful on the roads.

“Everyone, watch out for other drivers, watch out for yourselves,” she said.

AAA echoes similar advice.

The agency says wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year.

“Have more patience. Go slower. Allow a lot more space between cars. Break sooner. It’s all the basics,” said Christina Griffiths, spokeswoman for the AAA Hoosier Motor Club. “We advise you not to use cruise control when it’s raining outside. Stay and control yourself.” “In everything.”

Stormy weather also means potential for road flooding.

“Even those few inches of water on the road can be really dangerous. So try to avoid those flooded roads as much as possible,” Griffiths explained. “Make sure to be careful and avoid sliding through it and hydroplaning.”

AAA also urged drivers to make sure their cars are ready before they head out the door.

They suggest making sure your windshield wipers are working, and checking tire tread and pressure, including the spare, at least once a month. They also say to be sure to check the pressure when the tires are cold.

They are urging drivers to move over the lane when they see a broken down vehicle and to be patient with roadside assistance agencies like AAA, especially this weekend.
