Jeremiah Smith continues to collect records in his first year as a Buckeye.
With his third reception against Purdue, Smith broke Chris Carter’s Ohio State freshman receptions record, giving Smith 42 on the year. The first-year wide receiver had already claimed the Carter freshman school record for receiving yards, as he racked up 678 yards in Saturday’s game, tying his mark for touchdowns with eight.
The record-breaking catch came in style for Smith, a 16-yard snag through double coverage that nearly converted a first down on third-and-17 for the Buckeyes. A Will Howard sneak moved the chains on the next 4th and 1.
Smith has been breaking Ohio State records since his first few weeks on campus. During spring practice, he became the first freshman to ever remove the black tape, and then in the summer, he was the first freshman to be named “Iron Buckeye” by the team’s strength and conditioning staff.
On his way to tying Carter’s record for touchdowns, Smith caught a touchdown pass in his first seven games, another high mark in school history. He was named a semifinalist for the Shawn Alexander Freshman of the Year Award on Wednesday.
