Jessica Pegula withdraws from the WTA Finals due to a knee injury

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Jessica Pegula pulled out of her final match at the WTA Finals on Wednesday due to a left knee injury.

The American, who has lost her first two matches and has already been eliminated from contention in the semi-finals of the ATP Finals, will be replaced in the Orange Group by top alternate and ninth seed Daria Kasatkina.

Sixth seed Pegula, who was scheduled to play second-seeded Iga Swiatek on Thursday in her final quarterfinal match, said she decided to withdraw because she did not feel “comfortable moving around on the court.”

“I was kind of struggling with a minor injury, and for whatever reason, it really flared up this week. I’m not really sure why,” Pegula said. “The few days leading up to training it was really good, but it started creeping up right before my first match.”

Pegula lost to Coco Gauff and Barbora Krejkova.

Swiatek still has a chance to join Gauff as the other semifinalist from the group. A win over Kasatkina combined with a Gauff win over Krejcikova would send Swiatek to her third straight WTA Finals semifinal.
