Jessica Simpson’s erratic behavior and lofty ambitions have pushed her 10-year marriage to former football star Eric Johnson to the brink, leaving the once-happy couple headed for divorce, sources exclusively tell Life & Style.
“Eric has had her crazy mood swings,” says an insider. “Jessica feels as if their marriage has lost its romance. Everyone wonders how long they can continue like this.
The reality star turned fashion mogul was recently snapped on camera without her ring at Los Angeles International Airport, and there are rumors around town that the couple is already in a tentative breakup.
As Life & Style previously reported, Jessica, 44, and Eric, 45, have been living a mostly separate life for nearly a year. The former princess of pop spent months away from her hunky husband while in Nashville, desperate to reignite her stagnant singing career.
Jess was recently snapped without her ring when she dropped off her three kids — daughters Maxwell Drew, 12, and Birdie Mae, 5, and son Ace Knot, 11 — on their first day of school, and Eric was nowhere in sight. Months before that, it was reported that they were going through a difficult stage in their marriage.
Meanwhile, Eric has not appeared on Jessica’s Instagram page since April, and a source says he has distanced himself from her for “over a year.”
“Eric has been doing his own thing for longer than anyone seems to know,” the source shares. “He was very frank about how difficult it is to live with someone who is obsessed with surgery and disconnected from reality most of the time.”
The retired tight end was once seen as a stabilizing force for Jessica following her headline-making 2006 divorce from pop singer Nick Lachey. They tied the knot in 2014, and longtime friends have credited Eric with helping the ditzy blonde through a horrific booze addiction she reportedly kicked in 2017.
But Jess sparked relapse rumors in 2022 when she appeared to stumble over her words in a video ad for Pottery Barn, and in her few public appearances last year she sometimes appeared flustered.
“Eric has been dealing with a lot of Jessica’s baggage for a long time,” the insider notes. “She will scream with joy for one minute, then start crying and hide in her bedroom for a day.”
“They both really want what’s best for their kids, but as far as their marriage goes, you’re afraid it’s just a matter of time. Eric is at his breaking point.”
