How Colorado has improved, both this season and during his tenure, and played this year under Deion Sanders is one of the most impressive efforts in college football. Joel Klatt thinks he deserves that recognition, too.
Klatt talked about Coach Prime and the Buffaloes during his show “The Herd” on Wednesday. No matter what you think of them, a 7-2 overall record and contention for a Big 12 Championship and the College Football Playoff is something they know needs to be recognized.
“They control their destiny in the Big 12, which means they control their destiny in the College Football Playoff — which is great, guys,” Klatt said. “I mean I’m sorry. Like, I don’t care what you think of Deion. I don’t care what you think of their style or what they do on social media. Deion Sanders’ coaching job at Colorado is amazing.
This, in Klatt’s opinion, should be part of the work of Sanders, who will be named National Coach of the Year this fall.
“He should be on a very short list this year for National Coach of the Year,” Klatt said.
Colorado has reached a point this season where it’s hard to argue against an opinion like that about Sanders.
After a mediocre start, the Buffs won six of seven, including five in the Big 12. They won those six by an average margin of 17.5 points. The loss is also a respectable three points to one as they took a lead into the fourth quarter against a Top 20 opponent in Kansas State.
This 5-1 record in league play ranks second in the Big 12 standings. This puts them three games away from playing in the conference championship. This game would be all that stands between them and a potential bye, not to mention a berth, in the playoff. That’s without even considering the possibility of them being overall, albeit questionable, 17th in the latest CFP rankings.

All this after going 1-11 in 2022 before Sanders arrived and being 4-8 in his debut season last year.
Many coaches have done a great job this season. However, Sanders was among the best, based on where Colorado is headed in the final quarter of their campaign.
