Netflix artist defends Arcane's $250M budget: 'Let this be the benchmark if you want artistry and quality'

A new report recently revealed that Arcane is the most expensive anime series ever produced – but industry professionals have come out in defense of League of Legends’ reported price tag of $250 million.

“Let this be the example of the standard if you want art and quality,” production designer and artist Jason Shire, who has worked on shows like Blue Eye Samurai and Ultraman: Rising, wrote on Twitter in response to the news. “Perfection takes time, and it takes resources. Every frame of Arcane is truly a painting, meticulous at a level I feel our viewers deserve. Using the animation medium to be expressive, and to tell incredibly larger-than-life stories.”

The nine episodes of Arcane’s first season were reported to have cost around $80 million to produce, with costs for the second season rising to $100 million. Series producers and League of Legends developers Riot Games also reportedly spent $60 million on promotion over the two seasons, but refused to confirm the numbers.

The show, which is set to conclude with its upcoming second season and which has garnered enthusiastic initial reactions, follows two sisters, Jinx (Ella Purnell) and Vie (Hailee Steinfeld), who find themselves on opposite sides of the escalating conflict between Piltover, its utopia, and Zone, its underbelly. oppressor. The first season was released in 2021, so the final season is long awaited.
