The NFL announced on Saturday that it had fined the San Francisco 49ers $11,817 for tackle Trent Williams for punching Kansas City Chiefs safety Brian Cook in the head last Sunday in the 49ers’ 28-18 loss to… Chiefs. Williams was understandably frustrated with his team’s sloppy game against the team to which the 49ers lost the Super Bowl in February. But it was Cook’s actions that pushed the future Hall of Famer over the edge.

Williams was on the floor after a play when Cook decided to take a cheap shot and hit Williams in the head. Williams, in turn, responded by hitting Cook in the head. The 49ers star was immediately ejected from the game. Cook was not fired.

Cook was fined just $8,442.64 for his role in the altercation. 49ers fans will undoubtedly be confused by Cook being fined less than Williams, even though Cook was the one who started things. The fine imposed on Williams is consistent with NFL fines for hitting, kicking or kneeling. It is not known why Cook was fined more than $3,000 for doing the same thing.

Sunday’s game between the 49ers and Chiefs got a little rough in the second half. CB Deommodore Lenoir was also fined $11,817 for the unnecessary roughness penalty. Kansas City’s WR Skyy Moore was fined $9,356.83 for his actions on the same play Lenoir was fined for.

San Francisco is currently 3-4 and will host the 3-3 Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. This game is a must-see for the 49ers and Cowboys who have been struggling.
