PEPPERANISECINNAMONCLOVECARDAMOMNUTMEGSPANGRAM: MASALACHAI My Rating: Average My Score: 1 Tip
I realize that such an admission could result in me being expelled from my home country, the United Kingdom, but I never drink tea. Not a single cup had passed my lips before – which meant I was at a greater disadvantage today than ever before.
Even putting aside my drinking habits, this Strands puzzle is strangely specific. Why Masalachai? We’ve previously had one Strands game around coffee, with the likes of MOCHA and LATTE, but even though I don’t drink it either, I was at least able to make educated guesses based on having lived in a world where there are other people who drink it regularly. But the topic here is not “types of tea” – with ginseng, green tea, breakfast or something else – but rather specifically the ingredients of masala tea. This may be very common, but if you don’t drink it, you’ll be a bit stuck.
Fortunately I only needed one hint. I spotted PEPPER by chance, then asked Strands to give me a clue and got anise. Although I still had no idea what the name spangram might be, I had a strong hunch that the other answers would be spices, so I found the likes of cardamom and nutmeg by trial and error. That left SPANgram, which revealed itself on the board to make up for my lack of knowledge on the subject.
