With the score at 1-1 at half-time, Arsenal were on the verge of being eliminated from the Champions League, yet they produced an inspiring second-half performance – one of the club’s best ever performances in Europe.
“I remember that the first half was equal, but in the second half, Henry shot the ball towards the corner, [Robert] Peres, Edo & Company. “There’s been a riot, and he’s sent us ecstatic!” added Jay Wiseman, who was also at the game.
Arsenal regained the lead five minutes into the second half when Henry cut inside and played Freddie Ljungberg who fired into the bottom corner.
The Gunners then took control of the game in search of a third and two goals, which finally came in the 85th minute via Henry’s stunning goal.
The Frenchman collected the ball in his own half, raced into the penalty area, beat Javier Zanetti with a trick, and then fired a shot into the bottom corner.
In the Inter division, Richard was actually sent off for celebrating Ljungberg’s goal, while Kelvin “went crazy” over Henry’s goal but managed to survive by “speaking a little Italian”.
Three minutes later, Arsenal scored another goal, as Henry Ljungberg’s cross missed the middle, but easily fell into Edu’s goal, who passed it into the open goal.
Chaos, confusion and delirium for Arsenal fans.
A minute later the knockout was completed when Jérémy Aliader, who came on as a late substitute, passed the ball to Robert Pires to take the fifth.
