San Diego State vs Wyoming predictions, picks, odds, how to watch college football on Saturday

The Mountain West Conference quickly became so dense that the likes of San Jose State, Boise State, and UNLV began to pull away.

Well, this matchup involves a few teams trending in the opposite direction, but it could give us one of the most competitive games on a loaded slate.

The San Diego State Aztecs (2-3) travel to Laramie, Wyoming to take on the Wyoming Cowboys (1-4). Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM ET on CBS Sports. San Diego State is a two-point favorite on the point spread, while the over/under is 42.5.

Last Saturday, San Diego State ended a three-game losing streak with a win over Hawaii. However, they are not the only ones gaining momentum, as Wyoming earned its first win of the season two weeks ago over Air Force.

The Cowboys rode high on their bye week and look to come off the heat after having plenty of time to prepare. So, which side should you be on against the Mountain West? Let’s get into my San Diego State vs. Wyoming predictions and college football picks for Saturday, October 12.

San Diego State Football

When you look at the Aztecs’ offense, one person stands out: running back Marquise Cooper. Cooper had 52% of the Aztecs’ touches with 129 carries and 10 receptions.

Cooper has been efficient in his workload as well. He comes in averaging 4.6 yards per carry and hits the dirt five times. However, Cooper’s numbers are still inflated due to the tremendous performance he had against Texas A&M Commerce to open the year, where he rushed for 223 yards on 27 carries.

Since then, Cooper has averaged just 3.8 yards per carry. He’ll have to contend with a Wyoming defense that’s better than the numbers show against the rush. They rank 79th in defensive rushing success rate and 40th in tackling.

This game may fall on Danny O’Neill’s arm. O’Neal has been solid and will have a good matchup against the Cowboys’ secondary. However, if they couldn’t run the ball on early downs, the Aztecs struggled to continue drives, ranking 103rd in third-down conversion rate.

Wyoming football

The Cowboys have been beaten by wide margins in three of their first four losses, and while some of that has certainly been on defense, some of it is on offense, which had not met expectations until last week.

Many are taking season highs on Wyoming dual-threat quarterback Evan Svoboda after he showed some flashes last year. However, he couldn’t get things going in the air, and things started to go awry for the Air Force – Svoboda completed 71% of his passes and ran for two scores to lead the Cowboys to their first win.

His mobility will be key, as San Diego State’s secondary was strong. However, the Aztecs struggled to slow down rushing attacks.

The Aztecs rank 130th nationally in defensive line yards and 89th in yards per rush allowed. This game should breathe some life into the Cowboys’ backfield, which is averaging just 2.5 yards per rush.

Aside from Svoboda, Wyoming’s key player will be Sam Scott. The rookie took over the starting job averaging 4.5 yards per carry and had his best performance yet.

Given the extra time in the game plan for this game, we should see the Cowboys continue their offensive momentum.

San Diego State vs Wyoming prediction

This match will likely be a tough battle, as both teams rank at the bottom when it comes to offensive rating. However, offensive conflict is what will keep Wyoming alive as a “house dog.”

They have a huge advantage coming out after successful performances on both sides of the ball. We should see them control the ground game on both sides and limit San Diego State’s opportunities to exploit their secondary.

The Cowboys are back at home.
