When it’s not getting cast members fired, old stars being pissed off, or losing directors, the Scream reboot is making a big chunk of change. However, controversies have continued since Scream 6 became the third highest grossing film in the series. From financial controversies with the firings of Neve Campbell and Melissa Barrera to the exit of Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon from the “Nightmare” project, Scream 7 looked like it would be an additional meta, exploring how a simple sequel turned into a Hollywood fiasco. But, after providing proof of the film’s life, Variety reports that Scream 7 is, God willing, set to hit theaters on February 27, 2026, giving Ghostface more than a year to get his act together.
In some ways, it worked. Without Barrera or Jenna Ortega, the actual new series, producers found the money to “respectfully” pay Campbell to reprise the role of Cindy Prescott. This should finally give fans the proper Sydney movie they’ve been deprived of because the last two films pushed her into glorified guest star positions. The studio also turned to Kevin Williamson to direct. Although he’s written three Scream movies and, for our money, the three best Scream movies (Scream, Scream 2, and Scream IV), this is the first time the studio has given him a role in his bulging directorial pants. It’s an idea that the studio has ignored for nearly 30 years, which coincidentally is almost how long it’s been since Williamson directed the film. His first and only film, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, came out in 1999.
