Longtime Saturday Night Live boss John Mulaney returned to Studio 8H last night to host the show just days before the US presidential election. Not surprisingly, most of the talk following the episode revolved around a surprise appearance by Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as a fun appearance from Hillary Clinton’s former running mate, Sen. Kim Kaine. However, aside from those risqué political bits, the episode also included a lot of traditional SNL stuff that I couldn’t get enough of including a musical about bus stop milk that featured Pete Davidson and my personal favorite, a pair of new characters inspired by unconventional relationships Between Lana Del Rey and Bella Hadid.
If you don’t follow celebrity romances, let me give you the quick highlights here. Successful model Bella Hadid is dating Adnan Banuelos, a self-described cowboy who shows and trains horses. Her sister Gigi, who is also a model, has been rumored to be in relationships with celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper and Zayn Malik, but Bella went in a completely different direction and recently bought land in Texas to be closer to her partner. . Likewise, popular singer Lana Del Rey recently married a swamp tour guide named Jeremy Dufresne. He does airboat tours in Louisiana, and once took actor Glen Powell for a spin, which made enough of an impression that the Top Gun: Maverick star posted on Instagram about it.
Both couples seem very happy, but they also tend to elicit double confusion from people when they first hear about the relationship, which is a larger phenomenon that extends beyond the famous. I’m sure you personally know at least one couple that doesn’t seem like they belong together at all on paper. That’s what Saturday Night Live built on last night with two new characters, a poet and Barnard College student who specializes in cemeteries and a rowdy Soul Cycle instructor who loves music. The two are played by Marcelo Hernandez and Jane Wicklin, and both are really committed to the characters. You can watch the chaos below…

One of the keys to Saturday Night Live’s longevity is that it’s a big tent comedy. There is no single style of humor. Last night saw a lot of political jokes, obviously given what’s going on in the world. It also featured that absolutely crazy John Mulaney musical, as well as some stuff like that that’s always relatable. Bella Hadid and Lana Del Rey’s current partners may be unique for 2024, but since the dawn of time, people have been getting together and seemingly not having any business together on paper. There is no accounting for personal attraction.
I love him. There are many couples in the world who seem destined to be together. This is the game for some people, but I take my hat off to anyone who is willing to step completely out of their comfort zone and take risks to make a relationship work with someone who lives a completely different life. These are the things that make the world interesting.
As for Saturday Night Live, it is, of course, in its historic 50th season. The show previously announced that it would be bringing back plenty of former cast members and famous faces for random appearances, all of which will culminate in a fun special in February. The show will return with a new episode next week hosted by comedian Bill Burr.
