Spike Lee's Colin Kaepernick docuseries may not land on ESPN, after all

Four years ago, ESPN commissioned Spike Lee for a documentary series about Colin Kaepernick. Now, it may not be broadcast on ESPN, after all.

Via Matt Belloni of Puck, ESPN doesn’t plan to debut Colin Kaepernick’s Da Saga for at least another year. If that’s not fast enough for Lee, Kaepernick and producer Jemele Hill, ESPN will let them shop elsewhere.

Belloni explains that the project was delayed due to Lee’s schedule and Kaepernick’s “heated disagreements [and Lee] On the direction of the project.” Kaepernick and Lee have largely resolved their issues, according to Ourand; apparently, Kaepernick wanted the series to focus on his experience and Lee wanted to “expand the series beyond” Kaepernick. The final cut will show how they struck a balance .

Kaepernick last played in the NFL during the 2016 season. His career ended in a fog of complicity fueled by false narratives to justify his ostracism. Only the Seahawks invited him to visit in 2017. In 2022, the Raiders offered him a workout.

In 2019, the NFL tried to design a workout for Kaepernick that all teams would be invited to. A dispute over the NFL’s waiver language derailed the exercise, prompting Kaepernick to do something on his own. Ultimately, both sides are to blame (in our assessment) for what happened five years ago.

Several weeks ago, Kaepernick (who turns 37 in November) said he still wanted to play in the NFL. Rightly or wrongly, that window has closed. Now, the biggest question is when or if the curtain will rise on Lee’s docuseries about Kaepernick.
