For the first time in more than 15 years since The Police played their last show at Madison Square Garden, Sting returned to the Big Apple on Monday and performed once again as part of a power trio. Instead of a reunion with former Police bandmates Stuart Copeland and Andy Summers, Sting’s new lineup includes guitarist Dominic Miller and drummer Chris Maas – which is why the legendary singer and guitarist’s latest North American tour is titled Sting 3.0.
Sting’s three-night staging at the Brooklyn Paramount on Monday (which resumes on Wednesday) was a huge success as he and his bandmates played a focused, economical set of solos and Police songs, listening to the simplicity that Sting’s previous band was known for (even the stage setup didn’t distract from the music). .
The British musician kicked off with his classic song “Message in a Bottle,” offering a well-balanced set of his biggest hits (including “Fields of Gold,” “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” “Walking on the Moon,” and “Desert Rose.” and “All This Time”) and deep cuts (including “Shape of My Heart” and “Why Should I Cry for You”).
Along with the popular single and the Police material, Sting performed his final single he recorded with Miller and Maas, the rocker “I Wrote Your Name (On My Heart)” – which may serve as a tease for more new material from the trio. He also unveiled a rare song from the past: a reworking of “I Burn for You,” which the Police first recorded for the soundtrack of the 1982 film Brimstone and Treacle.
Near the end of the set and during the encore, Sting performed his two most important songs from his Police days, the iconic “Every Breath You Take” and “Roxanne” — the latter of which included a jazzy interlude. He concluded the evening by playing guitar on the reflective “Fragile” – which, along with another song from the previous set, “Driven to Tears,” provided a very sobering moment given the current state of the world.
The show captured Sting’s good-natured — and even humorous — spirit with his banter with the audience between songs. Thanks to the tremendous support from Miller and Maas, Sting’s vocals and acts sounded stronger than ever as evidenced by this first night of his shows in Brooklyn. Like The Police, Sting’s power trio delivered no-frills, energetic music to entertaining results.
