summary

No one can know for sure what tomorrow will bring; However, the tales told on big and small screens, and through games and comics as well, have provided plenty of visions of what might be to come. Will androids dream of electric sheep? Will rock star and terrorist Keanu Reeves (John Wick: Chapter 4) make his presence known? Will future African technologies change life as we know it? These are some of the futuristic possibilities conjured up by beloved pop culture titles – and they’re all part of the Australian Center for the Moving Image’s world premiere exhibition The Future and Other Stories too.

Running at the Screen Museum in Melbourne from Thursday 28 November 2024 to Sunday 27 April 2025, The Future & Other Fictions is positioned as the big summer show, a love letter to and a deep dive into future storytelling. Featuring more than 180 titles, including Blade Runner 2049, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Cyberpunk 2077, and The Creator. Saltsea Chronicles, the NEOMAD sitcom and Björk’s music video “The Gate”: they’re all covered too.

Before he was just Kane, Ryan Gosling (The Fall Guy) starred in the 35-year-old Blade Runner sequel — and before Dune and Dune: Part 2 hit screens, Denis Villeneuve directed Blade Runner 2049. “Other Stories” for attendees to follow in their footsteps through miniature sets, which is one of the must-sees of the exhibition.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever gets the nod thanks to Oscar-winning costumes designed by Ruth E Carter, while sketches from NEOMAD also appear – as does concept art from The Creator, Cyberpunk 2077 and Saltsea Chronicles. This show is not just limited to well-known future performances, thanks to the work of Olalekan Jeyifous, Osheen Siva and Tāgata Moana art collective Pacific Sisters. In addition, with new commissions, DJ Hannah Brontë gets her own style, as do Liam Young and Natasha Wanganeen (Limbo).

As it celebrates how screens imagine the years ahead through a range of artwork, sets, props and scripts – along with original clips, costumes and design materials as well – The Future & Other Fictions also features a Björk-focused film season, complete with Björk: Biophilia Live in the lineup.
