Scott will be responsible for Republican efforts to gain more ground in the US Senate.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina has been selected as the next chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Scott’s fellow GOP senators elected Scott to the role on Wednesday. In this position, he is expected to lead the party’s efforts in the 2026 midterm elections with the aim of expanding their majority in the Council.

During last week’s election, Republicans won the Senate after six years of Democratic control, and now enjoy a margin of 53 to 47. As part of that new majority, Scott will also become chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.

“I am honored and humbled by the trust placed in me to protect and grow our Republican majority,” said Senator Tim Scott. “With President Trump in the White House and Republican leadership in Congress, help is on the way for the American people. Donald J. Trump has proven that when we fight the truth everywhere, we win. That’s why we must secure a Republican Senate for all four years of the Trump administration. This work begins today!”

Scott has been a close ally of President Trump since his first term. However, in 2023, he briefly ran for the Republican nomination for president when it was unclear whether Trump would be on the ticket. However, he withdrew last November when it became clear he was not gaining favor with GOP supporters, who still favored Trump over those who had entered the primary race, including Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley.

Scott then returned to full support of Trump. At one point, media reports suggested he might be a potential vice presidential pick for Trump before he ultimately chose Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance.
