McDonald’s is bringing its fan-favorite menu item back to the UK after nearly a decade of absence. Starting today, and for a limited time only, the McRib will be back on menus across the country.

Due to its rare and limited appearance, the pork-based McRib has gained cult status among McDonald’s fans. It was first introduced in 1981 by the fast food chain, before being “permanently” removed from menus in 2005.

But this is not the case in Germany and Luxembourg, where the sandwich proved so popular after its initial release that it has remained a full-time staple ever since.

The McRib will return in October 2024 (McDonald’s)

Despite its farewell, the sandwich has returned several times over the years. It was last in the UK for short runs between 2014 and 2016. It has been theorized in the past that the return of the McRib typically coincides with falling pork prices, while McDonald’s has previously said the limited appearances are due to a desire to keep the menu diverse throughout the year.

It has no bones, but it still contains an oddly shaped pork chop that is textured to look like ribs. As those who attended the last version will recall, this dish is topped with BBQ sauce, pickles and onions on a tall bun.

“It’s more than just a sandwich; it’s more than just a sandwich,” said Thomas O’Neill, head of menu at McDonald’s UK. It’s a phenomenon. We heard our fans loud and clear – the fan petitions and their pleas on social media – and after nearly a decade of anticipation, we’re thrilled to bring this iconic item back to the menu.

“Knowing how much the McRib was loved, we had little choice – we had to make it happen. It was time to step up and satisfy the cravings of McRib lovers across the country.”

McDonald’s has not confirmed how long the McRib will return to the UK, so is advising customers to act quickly. The burger costs £4.49 per burger, and £6.19 as part of a medium value extra meal.
