Harris died at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) on Saturday morning, following what was reported to be minor surgery last month.
Harris, born Gilbert Auchinleck, has used numerous on-air nicknames over the years, beginning his radio career in 1966 as “Gil Harris” at CKDA and CFMS-FM Victoria. From there, stop at CJAT Trail, BC, CKOM Saskatoon, CKSO Sudbury and CHAM Hamilton.
He made his on-air debut in Toronto on CFTR as “Doc Holiday” in 1971, before returning to the West Coast and CKLG Vancouver in 1973, where he was initially heard as “Gil” and, by 1976, “Doc Harris”. Harris held roles in programming, music direction, and morning show management. After an 11-year career with the station, Harris moved to CFMI-FM Vancouver in 1984, followed by CKKS-FM, CFUN, and a nearly decade-long stint doing fill-in on CKNW.
