Waltz tells Colbert that close election 'disappoints' him: 'Constitution versus not the Constitution'

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, told the CBS late-night host he’s disappointed the presidential race is so close.

In a pre-recorded conversation Colbert had with Walz while on the campaign trail in Pennsylvania that aired Monday evening, the vice presidential candidate addressed the state of the race, claiming it was divided between those who support the US Constitution and those who do not. , and are also divided on issues of access to abortion. He also ripped a pro-Trump comedy joke against Puerto Rico.

“It’s disappointing because I think the choice is very stark,” Walz told the “The Late Show” host when asked his opinion on the race’s closeness.

“But it’s not surprising. The country is really divided, and there was a group of people who figured that out, and I think they did a great job of making people think that it was,” the candidate added during the clip. “It doesn’t matter, everyone is the same.”

He then explained how he views the divide, saying: “And in this case, you have the Constitution versus not the Constitution. You have reproductive rights versus ‘I don’t care if you like it or not’ I’m going to tell you what to do whether you like it or not, from Donald Trump.”

Walz was referring to former President Trump’s recent line at a rally in Wisconsin in which he said that as president he would enact policy that would protect women from crime and other threats from illegal immigrants coming across the southern US border.

The liberal governor then criticized the Trump campaign over the anti-Puerto Rican joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at Trump’s rally in Madison Square Garden last week.

“And do we end up insulting people? I know we’re sitting in Pennsylvania. There are 500,000 Puerto Ricans here, and Puerto Ricans, like all Americans, are very proud of the country they come from.”

“Exactly. Have you ever been to the Puerto Rican Day Parade? They’re very interested in Puerto Rico, as they should be,” Colbert said.

Elsewhere during the interview, the late-night host asked Walz, a former high school assistant football coach, to give an impassioned pregame speech to independent voters on the eve of Election Day.

“Okay guys, it’s time to dig deep,” Walz said, with the help of a cue card containing a sports cliché Colbert gave him. “We know we’re in the last two minutes of this game. We’re going to give it 110 percent. We know we’ve got to leave it on the field, because democracy “At stake here, we have a chance to unite this country. There is no ‘I’ in the country.”

“So, look, we’re going to win this thing. We’ve got the best candidate; we’ve got the best quarterback on the team in Kamala Harris. We’ve got the best game plan. We know their game plan for the 2025 draft is not going to go well.” To be good to any one of us, and thus, by creating an economy of opportunity, we will put the ball over the goal line.
