Based on the Polish novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher has quickly become one of Netflix’s biggest series. The show follows the adventures of Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) as he navigates a medieval-inspired fantasy world known as the Continent and battles masses of monsters in exchange for coins. Fate is bound to Princess Cirilla of Cintra, known as Ciri (Freya Allan), and becomes her protector and de facto adoptive father thanks to an ancient custom known as the Law of Surprise. Powerful in her own right, Ciri possesses abilities no one has seen in centuries. As a result, many across the continent aim to exploit it for their own political purposes. For this reason, Geralt enlists the help of a powerful witch named Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), whom he also happens to be in love with, in order to train Ciri and keep her away from anyone who intends to harm her.
Such events served as a prelude to the third season of The Witcher, which was based on Sapkowski’s second novel in the Witcher saga, The Time of Contempt. As Ciri learns how to harness her power, those on Aretusa find themselves divided, leading to an epic battle on the Isle of Thaned between Nilfgaardian forces, aiming to control the Brotherhood and Aretusa itself, and those who refuse to follow them. The tyrannical rule of Emperor Ymir var Emrys (Bart Edwards).
While the series finally attempted to return to its source material after Season 2 deviated too heavily from the books and the lore of the original Witcher story, it was criticized for its pacing and strange editing choices. With the show returning for Season 4, which is already facing its own hurdles ahead of its release, The Witcher has a chance to correct some of Season 3’s biggest flaws and satisfy a skeptical fan base.

Geralt of Rivia, played by Henry Cavill in the first three seasons of The Witcher, has quickly become synonymous with the actor. Cavill, a big fan of Sapkowski’s novels, as well as the video games based on the books, expressed his interest in portraying the White Wolf before there were discussions about adapting the TV series. Actors rarely know every detail of a character and the world they’re in before starting a show, but Cavill was famous for having such knowledge during filming. However, the series will need to correct its biggest flaws from Season 3 and continue to adhere to Sapkowski’s intricate and complex world if they have any hope of satisfying fans in any capacity. Unlike the second season of the series, the third season offered a better adaptation of Sapkowski’s novel. However, its pacing and strange editing choices, especially regarding Aretuza’s epic exhibition battle, left fans wanting. Because of this, what was supposed to be a legendary battle with dire consequences for the continent seemed dull. Given what’s happening across the continent with Ciri, Nilfgaard, the Scoia’tael, the Elves, and the Brotherhood, it was important for the show to allow those stories to unfold at a similar pace that made sense to the viewer. Unfortunately, it felt scattered and unpolished at times, taking away from the huge events that unfolded throughout Season 3.
