Two characters have been recast in the fourth season of The Witcher after their actors left the series. This is, of course, a huge success for the fantasy series, especially after complaints after Season 2 that Netflix was making too many sweeping changes to the canon. It will be interesting to see how The Witcher recovers, especially since the actors taking on these roles will have big shoes to fill and face the challenge of satisfying an existing group of fans. Recasts are never easy, but audiences are usually less forgiving when it happens in a series like The Witcher.
This Netflix fantasy series is based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, which actually served as the inspiration for a video game series of the same name. So, long before the first season of The Witcher was released, there was an established group of fans ready to stand up for the stories they loved. Unfortunately, The Witcher Season 2 failed to impress, and this is when the problems really started for Netflix. Season 3 was a marked improvement, but word had already spread that the star of the series was walking away and would need to be recast. Now, another actor in The Witcher must also be replaced.
Both Geralt of Rivia and Vesemir have been recast in Season 4 of The Witcher, and both characters will be played by new actors
The first role to be recast in The Witcher is of course Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill announced that he will be leaving the Netflix series before the release of Season 3, and The Witcher director Lauren Hissrich announced that Geralt will be recast for Season 4. Now, it has been confirmed that there is another role that needs to be recast. The role of Vesemir, Geralt’s wizard mentor introduced in Season 2, will also be played by a different actor in Seasons 4 and 5 of The Witcher since Kim Bodnia will not be returning to the role. However, the reasons for Cavill and Bodnia’s departure differ.
The fourth season of The Witcher is expected to be released in 2025.
Why Henry Cavill left The Witcher after Season 3 (and who will replace him) Liam Hemsworth will play Geralt in Season 4 of The Witcher
Cavill’s choice to leave The Witcher came as a huge surprise, as he was of course the hero, and he defended himself as a personal fan of the franchise. The exact reason for his departure is unknown, and Cavill himself offered no explanation at all, only making a general announcement of his casting as well as thanking Netflix and The Witcher showrunner. However, there have been indications throughout Cavill’s time on the show that he and the Netflix writers will argue over what changes will be made to the canon story.
Regardless of Cavill’s reason for leaving The Witcher, he will be replaced in Season 4 by Liam Hemsworth, who played Gale in the Hunger Games series. Netflix has already released the first look at Hemsworth’s Geralt, and while he could never be confused with Cavill, he plays the role surprisingly well. The remaining cast of The Witcher, including Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan, paid tribute to Hemsworth after filming The Witcher Season 4 and encouraged fans to give the actor a fair chance.
Why Kim Bodnia will no longer play Vesemir in Season 4 (and who will replace him) Kim Bodnia has another commitment
Although Vesemir, who plays Bodnia, did not appear in the third season of The Witcher, the character is included in the script for the upcoming fourth season. Unfortunately, Bodnia will not be playing his part. The actor has joined the cast of the Apple TV+ director’s film F1, which wasn’t initially supposed to get in the way of his involvement in The Witcher. However, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes changed things, and Bodnia ended up unable to participate in both projects. Therefore, a new actor will have to step in to play Vesemir in The Witcher Season 4 and beyond. Currently, there is no information about the actor who will take on the role.
Although it’s never preferable to recast a role on a TV show, Bodnia’s departure may be to Hemsworth’s advantage.
Although it’s never preferable to recast a role on a TV show, Bodnia’s departure may be to Hemsworth’s advantage. There’s supposed to be a strong connection between Geralt and Vesemir, and that’s something Cavil and Bodnia have already created together. Hemsworth will have the difficult task of trying to replicate his predecessor’s chemistry with his teammates, but in Vesemir’s case, he will have a fresh start. Whoever Netflix chooses to replace Bodnia, it will have to be someone who works well with Hemsworth on screen. If this is achieved, these two new actors in The Witcher will have a much easier time said and done.
