FINNEAS delivers subtle brilliance with new single “Lotus Eater.”

FINNEAS has released a new song called “Lotus Eater” as part of his latest album For Cryin’ Out Loud. While this review focuses on the single, keep in mind that there’s a lot more to explore on the album, which marks his third full-length release, aside from two deluxe editions of previous recordings.

Having listened to all of his previous works, I would say that “Lotus Eater” perfectly fits the mood I expect from FINNEAS. It’s quiet, sad, beautiful, a little theatrical, and unique. This is not to say that the music sounds predictable, but rather to highlight how successful FINNEAS has been in crafting a distinct musical identity. You can tell right away that this is his song, and that’s a big plus.

The track is fairly simple sonically, driven by a catchy vocal melody that often ends with long phrases. This special vocal style and note selection showcases the musical sound shared between FINNEAS and his sister, Billie Eilish, you can feel the familial connection between them. The song also gives a lot of attention to the guitar, layering fuzzy and clean guitars to create depth.

Although FINNEAS is a popular producer, “Lotus Eater” doesn’t have that over-produced feel. Instead, it sounds like a song that was crafted and perfected in a rehearsal space. If he produced this track entirely on his own, he deserves more credit for creating such an organic sound.

FINNEAS is known for including minute details in his productions, and “Lotus Eater” is no exception. If you listen closely, you can hear a whistle-like melody that enhances the atmosphere after the first chorus, and at one point, there is a heavy tremolo sound effect in the background that returns later in the song. These little, almost imperceptible touches elevate the track, even if you don’t consciously notice them.

I’ve listened to “Lotus Eater” about 15 times now, and while I’m neither tired of it nor eager to replay it, I think that’s indicative of its power — it’s the kind of song that can easily blend in at any moment. It’s not overwhelming, but rich in detail, making it versatile and easy to enjoy anywhere.

If you’re excited about the full album, don’t do what I did and start with the last song. Finneas is an exceptional artist, so give him a listen!
