Strands doesn’t get as much attention as its New York Times-nominated sister games Wordle and Connections, but it can be just as challenging and entertaining. Strands has just come out of beta, and is now on The New York Times’ official gaming app, which may bring it even more fans. I delve into the rules of the threads in this story.

How to play NYT Strands
1. Use Today’s Topic to search for words related to that topic. See one? Drag or click the letters in order. Click on the last letter twice to submit your guess. If you find a topic word, it will light up blue and stay on.
2. Other words you find are hint words that give you clues to the keywords. Find three hint words (each of which must contain at least four letters) and the game will reward you by showing you a keyword. But if you can’t decipher it, search for three more hint words and the game will highlight the letters of the keyword in order.
3. Find the word SPANgram, which is a special word that covers the entire puzzle, although it can flow across or from top to bottom. It summarizes the theme of the puzzle.
4. When you are finished, you will have used each letter on the board in either a keyword or a spangram. Thematic words fill the entire panel and do not overlap.

Keywords to unlock in-game hints
Your goal is to find the hidden words that fit the theme of the puzzle. If you’re stuck, search for any words you can find. Every time you find three words of four letters or more, Strands will reveal one of the keywords. These are the words I used to get those hints, but any four or more letter words you find will work:
LEAP, SPAM, COMA, MOCHA, LIMA, MAIL, PERT, PERM, CHAISE, PEAL, LEAPS, SOLE, MOLE, MILE, CAPE, SALE, ALONE Today’s Strands Puzzle Answers
These are the answers that relate to the topic. The goal of the puzzle is to find them all, including the spangram, which is a thematic word that connects from one side of the puzzle to the other. When you get them all (I initially thought there were always eight but I’ve learned that the number can vary), every letter on the board will be used. Here are the non-Spanish answers:
Anise, cloves, nutmeg, pepper, masala, spangram tea threads of the day
Today’s Strandsspangram is MASALA CHAI. To find it, start with the letter M which is three letters from the left in the top row, and work your way down.
