Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance in Eastern Market talks about the auto industry and the economy to voters
The Ohio senator and vice presidential nominee made his eighth visit to Michigan since becoming former President Donald Trump’s vice president. Vance spoke about election issues such as the economy, border security and especially in Detroit – the auto industry.
DETROIT (FOX 2) – J.D. Vance made his first visit to Detroit on Tuesday, speaking inside the Eastern Market to supporters and making similar statements as his previous visits.
He touched on electric cars and auto manufacturing, encouraged voters to cast their ballots early, and lavished praise on his running mate, Donald Trump. He also predicted his trips to the state.

“I’ll be in Michigan about 30 times,” he joked.
It was his eighth campaign stop since being named Trump’s running mate, and with the election less than a month away, it likely won’t be his last. The stop comes less than a week after the Ohio State Senator and vice presidential candidate visited Auburn Hills and Marne.
Michigan’s 15 Electoral College votes and its battleground status make it a key state to win for both Trump and his Democratic challenger, Kamala Harris.
Detroit and Wayne County have been Democratic strongholds for years and could be key to flipping Michigan red if the Republican ticket can convince voters to support them. However, the city was also a target of the former president, who called the city “corrupt” while making inaccurate claims about vote counting during the 2020 election.
Trump continues to claim he won the 2020 election, despite there being no evidence of any fraudulent voting as well as statewide audits confirming the race was secure and accurate.
During Vance’s visit, he was asked about a former campaign official encouraging supporters to “riot” during vote counting at the TCF Center one day after the November 2020 election.
“No one in this room and no one in this movement will riot,” he said.
The Vice President also praised Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s endorsement of the campaign while claiming that his statements about disaster aid being improperly used for immigrants rather than victims of Hurricane Helen were about the administration’s response as a whole.
Aside from visiting Auburn Hills and stopping in Shelby Township during the summer, Vance focused most of his time in Michigan in the western and northern part of the state, making several stops.
During a stop in Auburn Hills, where he spoke at an airline, Vance covered a range of topics, from sparring with Tim Walz to manufacturing in Michigan, as well as electric cars and China. He also took questions from reporters, including questions about mandates and incentives for battery-powered cars and trucks.
Vance’s running mate, former President Donald Trump, will also be in Detroit this week to speak at the Detroit Economic Club on Thursday.
Tuesday’s visit and any future visits come as Michigan voters have already begun casting their ballots. Absentee ballots began going out to voters in late September, and early voting will begin soon.
