Panthers surprisingly release veteran defenseman Troy Hill: Report

The Carolina Panthers may be a team to watch out for regarding the November 5 NFL trade deadline. The team has struggled mightily in 2024, posting a 1-5 record through six weeks.

Bryce Young was benched two weeks later, and many questioned the move considering Young couldn’t take all the blame for the team’s struggles. Veteran Andy Dalton took over the starting duties after Young was benched.

To add to the supposedly bizarre moves made by the Panthers, the team is reportedly releasing veteran linebacker Troy Hill.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, with the Panthers getting younger, a source says they are releasing veteran CB Troy Hill. “It’s a logical move for both sides, with the experienced defender becoming available.”

Rapoport noted that a source reported that the team was set to release Hill. This is odd considering the cornerback is still a veteran player, and is now presumably heading to a new team in need of secondary help.

Hill is a cornerstone, and there will likely be multiple suitors once news of his release is confirmed. The Los Angeles Rams may call up Hill given their current secondary issues and Hill has played with the team for six seasons.

Through six games, Hill had 32 total tackles and one pass defensed. The problem may be the coverage issues Hill is currently facing. So far, opposing quarterbacks are posting an 88.2 completion percentage and a 119.4 passer rating.

Despite these numbers at the moment, Hill is a very experienced defender. He played for the aforementioned Rams, Cincinnati Bengals, and Panthers.

Hill’s most successful season was in 2020 when he made three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.

There have been a lot of injuries in the league, and Hill will likely join a new team soon after he is officially released. The New Orleans Saints are also an immediate option as star cornerback Paulson Adepo suffered a fractured femur in his right leg and underwent season-ending surgery.

Given that the Panthers are 1-5 on the season and are releasing Hill, they may settle on the idea of preparing for 2025 by shuffling their current roster. As stated, the trade deadline is quickly approaching, and the Panthers may be a team to watch in terms of trading value players for much-needed investment capital.
