Boston College linebacker Thomas Castellanos, who lost his starting job earlier this week, will not return to the team, it was announced Thursday evening.
“Unfortunately, all good things come to an end, although that is closer than I would like,” Castellanos, who started 12 games last season and retained the starting job under new coach Bill O’Brien, wrote on X. He did not mention the transfer portal in his departure letter and did not enter it officially. The junior from Waycross, Georgia, began his career at UCF and appeared in five games in 2022.

O’Brien said Tuesday that Grayson James, who replaced Castellanos in last week’s win over Syracuse, will start Saturday when No. 14 Boston College visits SMU. O’Brien said Castellanos “wasn’t really happy” with the decision, adding that the midfielder had decided to step away from the team for several days.
Castellanos had 2,248 receiving yards and 1,113 receiving yards last season under coach Jeff Hafley, passing for 15 touchdowns and adding 13 on the ground. He had 18 touchdown passes and just five interceptions this season, but his accuracy has declined in recent weeks, and he completed just 2 of 7 passes against Syracuse before he was traded.
In his statement, Castellanos thanked the two coaching staffs for whom he played at Boston College and wrote that he had “some of the best experiences of my life at Eagle’s Nest and I will truly cherish those memories forever.”
