Jason “Sundance” Head accidentally shot himself on his Texas ranch on Friday, November 15.
The singer’s agent, Trey Newman, told PEOPLE Head magazine that he was hunting in the woods alone when he was shot in the stomach around 4-4:30 p.m. local time.
The Season 11 winner of NBC’s The Voice, 46, was airlifted to the hospital by helicopter. TMZ was the first to report the news.

After arriving at the hospital, the singer’s wife Misty shared an update via Head’s Facebook account, saying she finally “physically laid eyes on him and heard his beautiful voice.”
“He is in good spirits considering the past few hours. The children are with him now. Prayers were answered as there was no internal damage from the bullet. Thank you all for your prayers,” she said before detailing what happened.
According to Misty, Head was alone on the farm when the accident occurred.
It wasn’t his shotgun and no one shot him. He was out of the car and trying to grab his 22 when he grabbed it, and the 22 came out of its holster and hit the outside of the Jeep directly and took off. “Sundance said it happened so fast he could see the bullet exit,” she wrote.
Misty explained that Head “didn’t call” 911, even though she initially thought he did.
The country singer had forgotten his phone, “so he went down the driveway to the main road to flag down a parked car for help,” a Facebook post said. “After 10 cars, someone turned to help and called 911. Now this is what he told me… He’s receiving intensive treatment right now. “He is very lucky and grateful to be alive.”
Misty shared with fans that the bullet “entered above his navel and lodged in his abdominal wall,” missing “all his vital organs.”
She continued: “He will not need surgery because they do not remove the bullet.” “I’m sure [his doctor] He said why but my head is in a fog now. Having him on the larger side was a good thing. “The bullet is in his fatty tissue.”
Earlier in the evening, Misty told PEOPLE: “We appreciate all the invitations and will update everyone soon once we have more information.”
