Well, a new show has made it into the top 10 on Netflix, and it’s back for its third season, and it’s doing very well, debuting at number one. That would be The Lincoln Lawyer, which is now back for season 3, and the release of the season has not been cut in half as was the case with the first one, probably because Netflix didn’t like those numbers last time around, with people potentially backing out of the second installment.
Now, all 10 episodes of The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3 are here, and at least in early reviews, it has a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is…with only five reviews, but it’s still a very promising start, and suggests that eventually, this will likely live up to the quality of the other two seasons, which scored 80% and 91%. respectively. Now, the show has an average rating of 90% from critics and 84% from fans. very good!
I think this situation says something about the TV critic landscape, where only five critics across the country have ever watched the most popular show in America right now to give it a review. The exact same thing happened with Outer Banks season 4, which also has a 100% rating at the moment, but despite debuting so early and staying at number one for so long, it still has 5 critical reviews only. What is everyone doing? There seems to be a heavy bias toward movie reviews or even video game reviews compared to TV right now, which strikes me as quite odd considering that streaming TV is the most popular form of entertainment in America in terms of total hours watched. What are our priorities, as entertainment journalists, here? It’s very strange.

As for The Lincoln Lawyer, the series continues to be a huge success for Netflix, as it has abundant source material, good reviews, is beloved by audiences, is widely watched, and most importantly…it’s cheap. No need for flashy visual effects in this legal drama. It doesn’t need the prestige of Better Call Saul to be a hit. Netflix doesn’t care if it wins any Emmys (and wait, Better Call Saul never did, which is another TV critic’s crime).
Eventually, more reviews will come, but perhaps not many. Season 2 of The Lincoln Lawyer still only has 11 reviews after all this time, as it was once again the top show on Netflix for a long time. The first season has 35 acceptable reviews. Meanwhile, Dennis Quaid’s Horrible Reagan received 67 reviews from film critics. Smile 2 has 122. Strange.
Update (10/21): Checking back over the weekend when there was supposed to be plenty of time to finish the season, there is only one new review, bringing the total to six, but it’s still positive which means 100% stays .
Now we also have an audience rate of 93%. This is already up from Season 1’s 84% and Season 2’s 85%, though there haven’t been a lot of reviews yet, so we’ll see.
It’s no surprise that The Lincoln Lawyer remained in the top 10 on Netflix over the weekend, and I expect that to continue for a while with a full 10-episode season to watch, meaning it will be more widely disseminated. The show has not been renewed for a fourth season yet but there is almost 0% chance that it will not be renewed after performing well either critically, with audiences or in terms of viewership. We’ll likely hear something in the next few weeks.
