Promoter Frank Warren was once again a guest on Talk Sport, and today, the Queensberry boss teased us all with what he said would be a “fantastic fight for Daniel”. As is Daniel Dubois, who is set to follow up his demolition of Anthony Joshua in September with a fight in February.
Warren said today that although a deal is close, he cannot officially announce anything until the two men sign the fight contract. But Warren said Dubois would face a formidable opponent, in a fight that would be “very big for him.”
“We’re working on getting an agreement and getting through it. We’re close, and I’m sure we will do that,” Warren said. But until the contracts are signed, we can’t say anything. Daniel’s next fight will be very big for him. He has now captured Everyone’s fantasy, everyone wants to see him fight again. Daniel’s next opponent is going to be someone like Joseph Parker who comes in as a winning fighter of Daniel’s level and form. It’s going to be a great fight for Daniel to be on the roster, and that’s the level of form and quality we’re looking at .
So, who could be in the opposite corner in February? Could Parker be the former WBO heavyweight champion, with Warren unable to confirm until all the paperwork is completed? Other names that have been mentioned include Fabio Wardley (Warren has said he won’t be the next Fabio, but this fight could be a very big fight in the future) and Martin Pacoli (Warren has said here that if Pacoli gets past Ajit Kapayel, whom Pacoli has been ordered to fight by the IBF , will be “in the mix” later).
So, this leaves us wondering who the person could be in February. Do you have any ideas? The only guy that won’t be is AJ, who is now expected to return to action in the summer.
Warren warned that Joshua faces a long road back to title contention.
“People forget that Daniel’s fight with AJ was his mandatory fight to defend his belt. After he did that and won, he now has until April to fight whoever he wants,” Warren said. “So we can take whoever we want in a February fight. The International Boxing Federation is very strict about mandatory challengers, and now there will be other names before Joshua at the top of their list. So AJ is out of the picture as a mandatory challenger. “He will be out of the picture for a long time.”
