Catherine, Princess of Wales, delighted royal watchers this week with an unexpected appearance alongside her husband, Prince William.
The couple appeared in Southport, a town in northwest England, on Thursday, where the community is still grieving after the killings of three young girls this summer.
William and Kate are believed to have spent around 90 minutes with the families of Baby King, 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, 9, who lost their lives in July when they were attacked while attending a Taylor Swift concert. Themed dance class.
It was also an opportunity for the couple to sit down with some of the emergency services personnel who responded to the scene and hear about their experiences and the mental health support they received in the months that followed.

“The Princess of Wales broke off and returned to the building to hug the people who had responded because she could see the emotions in them and saw that it was difficult for them to convey their feelings and express the extent of the impact of the events,” Phil Garrigan, chief fire officer at Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, explained after the clash, according to news agency PA Media. It was a big moment for the famous royal, 42, and her first public outing since wrapping up her chemotherapy treatment.
Royal sources told CNN that the princess’s decision to join William on the visit was not a last-minute call, and that she wanted to do so to offer her support, compassion and sympathy to the local community in the coastal city.
But wanting to be there and doing the engagement are two completely different things. Ultimately, her appearance depended on whether she felt good enough that day.
King Charles previously visited the area in August, and the royal family clearly doesn’t want the city to feel forgotten as the weeks and months pass.
Southport’s participation was designed to be a low-key event and, in fact, was not announced in advance to the public or press. However, she quietly backed up the Princess’s own words a month ago when she revealed she had completed cancer treatment.
In a video message, Kate impressed royal fans by saying she was “looking forward to returning to work and making some other public engagements in the coming months when I can.”
Since then, she has held private meetings about some of her projects at Windsor Castle and made some private visits. All this indicates that her recovery is going well.
While aides don’t want to jeopardize her recovery by pushing her to show up before she’s ready, the Princess of Wales’s latest appearance shows she’s back at work, steadily increasing her workload as she continues to build strength.
All of this means that she’ll likely keep her workload lighter and that we’ll continue to see these unexpected pop-ups as she makes daily decisions on hiring on a case-by-case basis. If all continues well, it could mean she will take on more duties in the new year and perhaps start traveling again.
