Aldi recalls popular cheese for possible listeria contamination

Savencia Cheese USA has issued a recall of its well-ripened cheese because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. The recalled products include Brie and Camembert cheese sold in several retailers, including Aldi and Market Basket.

The Listeria organism was found at a Lena, Illinois, plant in processing equipment, so only a select number of cheeses made at that plant are being recalled.

The recalled Savencia Brie and Camembert cheese has been distributed to select regional stores in the United States, and retailers that sold the cheese are now pulling it from shelves. You can identify recalled cheese by looking at the UPC number and best-by date. The recalled cheeses include:

While the Listeria organism was found at the processing plant, testing found no contamination on the actual cheese. Savencia Cheese is issuing the recall out of an abundance of caution.

If you have recalled cheese, you should not consume it. Instead, throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone can get Listeria and it can cause a serious and sometimes fatal infection, especially in children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems – and it can also lead to miscarriage or stillbirth among pregnant women. Listeria infection may cause severe headache, stiffness, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea.

No illnesses have been reported from consumption of the recalled soft cheeses, but if you have any questions regarding Listeria, you can contact your health care provider. If you have any questions about the recall, you can contact Savencia Cheese Customer Relations at (800)-322-2743 or sc.customer.service@savencia.com.
