The Georgia football team returned home to the Turner Football Complex on a cold Friday night, defeating the Tennessee Volunteers 2-0 in front of 1,551 fans. Nicole Furness and Dasia Torbert led the scoring for the Bulldogs while goalkeeper Jordan Brown recorded his eighth clean sheet of the year.
“Tonight, we came out with the right energy from the time they came out of the locker room,” Georgia coach Keidan McAlpine said. “The energy was right. When the energy is right, we create moments for ourselves.
In what was a scoreless game for the first 66 minutes, Georgia had a chance from a corner kick and midfield captain Furness took advantage of a corner kick from fellow midfielder Devon Winters as she headed straight past the keeper for an early 1-0 lead. It was Viernes’ first goal of the year.
A few minutes later, graduate forward Tori Ben found Torbert, who had a defender on her back but a beautiful pass from Ben allowed Torbert to thread her right foot through the goalkeeper’s diving arms to extend Georgia’s lead to 2-0. Torbert has now scored three goals this season.
“We took the life out of the game and kept the ball for long periods of time,” McAlpine said. “Tonight was a very good win for the team, a very good performance. It was probably our first game where we played the full 90 minutes.”
Georgia attempted 21 shots, including nine on goal, while Tennessee attempted 11 shots with six on goal. For the first time in program history, Georgia has won three straight games against Tennessee.
Now Georgia will make one final start in SEC action as it takes on No. 11 seed Auburn on Thursday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m.
